On her graduation, Charley Reynolds receives the key to her new home, from her grandmother known as Marnie. The house belonged to Mathilde Dumas who was the muse for French artist Eugene Ingres. The attic, whose access has been blocked, is found to contain landscape paintings by Ingres and portraits which are found in packing crates. Charley and her grandmother are invited to a country house weekend party to meet long-lost relatives. When they arrive, Charley finds her newly found portraits hanging on the walls of the house. This whodunit is full of twists and turns. Are these Charley's paintings, or are they copies? Who are the long-lost relatives? What is the legacy of Eugene Ingres?
